Death of a Life – Grief

Yesterday Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett died, and yesterday I had a conversation with a friend, who brought up the subject of grief.  For my friend her grief has not been one of a death, but more a death of her own life. Years of sacrifice and hard work, continually putting her self out there, taking great risk, so that she would have financial and emotional security.  Only to end up at this point of time, alone, with a failed business, and the feeling of a failed life.  I believe that she will be okay, and that a process will just need to take place, and that she will end up better than ever, but for her.. right now she feels immobile, unable to put herself out there anymore.  For me, looking from the outside, I look at her as a kind of hero.  Someone who has not just sat on the sideline of life but has really put herself out there.  It reminds me of a quote by Theodore Roosevelt

 “It is not the critic who counts, not the man who points out how the strong man stumbled, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena; whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly, who errs and comes short again and again; who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, and spends himself in a worthy cause; who, at the best, knows in the end the triumph of high achievement; and who at the worst, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.”

Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett both epitomize this quote, never taking the most traveled road, and living their lives on their own terms.

Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett

Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett passed away today and thoughts of them brought back  memories of my childhood.   Back in the day, my grandmother worked at the Americana Hotel on Miami Beach, and one day and she brought me back Michael Jacksons autograph on the back of one of the paper placemats, along with some of his siblings signatures.  I was so excited about getting the autograph that I still have it till this day!  …and Farrah Fawcett, I had to have the Farrah hair!

The memories of my childhood are good… but it is also a big wake up call and reminder to live today, and to not wait until tomorrow!

The Wizard of Oz – You already have what you need!

Why is it that we sometimes are blind to our own gifts?  In the story the Wizard of Oz Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Scare Crow, and The Lion, all have what they are looking for.  The Tin man wants a heart, but he is already has the ability to be loved and loving.  The Scare Crow wants a brain, but he already has the ability to think.  The Lion wants to be brave, and Dorothy, she just wants to go home.  They all have it, they have the ability to do what they want.  It is just not until the Wizard validates them and tells them that they can before they believe it.  We need to learn to become out own Wizards. We need to recognize that everything that we need is already within us.  We just need to believe and act from that place. 

I know sometimes this is easier said that done… I like doing yoga with an instructor who tells me to breathe, relax.  So that I remember to breathe and relax as if it is okay now, I have permission.  So if you are having difficulty in some area, find something that reminds you like a mantra, a positive blog 😉 , or an activity, until it becomes more automatic for you.  Just remember to remember that you have it already!  Find it!  Believe it! Live it!
